Chinese Internet Crackdown Coming

Don’t for a second believe that this is about pornography, it’s no more about porn than the Taliban burning CD shops is. It’s the march of repression against freedom, ignorance against ideas, indoctrination against education.

The cyber police in China are out in force to crackdown on “pornography” and other things which pollute youths and cause crime. In reality they are beefing up the cyber cops to stop the growing, uncontainable wave of ideas; just as Iran and other dictatorial countries are trying to stop freedom and knowledge.

Sudan Joins Janjaweed in Genocide

New York Times reports that Sudanese planes falsely flagged as UN are running weapons and bombs into Darfur, and participating in aerial surveillance and bombing according to a confidential UN report

18sudan-600.jpgThe New York Times reports that Sudanese planes falsely flagged as UN are running weapons and bombs into Darfur, and participating in aerial surveillance and bombing according to a confidential UN report.

The Janjaweed have picked up activities recently, burning two villages in neighboring Chad in the last few weeks; murdering hundreds, and sending thousands into refugee camps.

This is unconscionable behavior for any nation, and demands a response beyond verbal. It’s time to take these planes out of the sky, act of war or not.

President Bush speaks out strongly against this, but doesn’t this participation in Genocide call for actions, not words and threats of sanctions?

The Death of a Good Man

Liviu Librescu, professor from Israel, holocaust survivor, and a good man: may you rest in peace with our deep and ever-abiding respect.

genpic.jpgTragedies sometimes make heroes of those you would least suspect — Liviu Librescu saved some students of his class at Virginia Tech by holding the door against Seung Hui Cho, while his Students jumped out the window. He died to gunshots from Seung.

Liviu Librescu, professor from Israel, holocaust survivor, and a good man: may you rest in peace with our deep and ever-abiding respect.

I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of G-d, I will do.

Virginia Tech Shooter Named

That said, the bill of rights protects the rights of “the people” generally interpreted to mean the citizens of the United States. Does this protection extend to visitors on Visa?

The Virginia Tech shooter was named this morning, he is Seung Cho Hui, a student in-country with legal visa from South Korea.

Whenever an evil person creates a tragedy like this some folks jump on the news feeding frenzy to gain notoriety for their political cause. That’s bound to happen again here.

So for those who were ready to call this a terrorist event, not the case. For those wondering about illegal immigration, not the case. For gun control advocates; you are probably still holding with bated breath about whether the guns were legal or not.

Regardless, all of the second guessing is non productive — what’s important is to recognize  that the responsibility for this goes to Seung Cho Hui, an evil man, now dead.

Bhutan Prepares for Democracy

What amazes me is reading some of the online forums in Nepal, the debaters in the forums are quoting heavily from the Federalist papers, and seem to know more about the founding of our country than most Americans. It’s thrilling that the old words which paved the way to our freedoms hundreds of years ago still have power across the world today.

bhutan3_web.jpgFreedom continues to break out all over the world. Bhutan is preparing mock polls so that people can learn how to vote in preparation for the upcoming 2008 Elections.

Jamia Hafsa Lal Masjid Break off Talks

Jamia Hafsa leaders broke off negotiations to end the library siege after an army helicopter hovered over them and took pictures. They reported that the helicopter sprayed “strange gas on them” but I would wager that’s the normal exhaust and they are exagerating.

Waziristan News

it appears that the Uzbeks fled to North Wazirstan, or they used some clever misdirection by putting Tahir Yaldashev’s bullet proof Prado 4×4 where he wasn’t going.

An interesting update to yesterday’s Pakistan coverage of the new Jirga and accords: Apparently most or all of the leaders who signed the original South Waziristan peace accords are now gone with the Uzbeks, which is probably why they made and signed a new one.
