Making and Breaking the Peace in Pakistan

While the new government is on record pace to make deals with the Taliban, the Taliban is breaking the deals before the ink dries.
Bill Roggio has details on the NWFP deal here, as well as the ongoing negotiations with Baitullah Mehsud.

The Taliban celebrated the deal by attacking a Police station killing four muslims and injuring 30 in the Northwest. The Taliban says it doesn’t count as breaking the peace deal….. perhaps they had their fingers crossed while they blew up the police station, I don’t know.

What I do know is that Baitullah promised to hang those who break the peace inside Waziristan upside down in the bazaar. We will shortly see if he’s a man of his word, or just another neo-takfirist liar at “Bumpy” Zawahiri’s beck and call.

Four people were killed and 30 hurt when a car bomb demolished a police station in northwest Pakistan Friday, ending a lull in attacks since a new government took power last month.

Taliban militants said the blast in the city of Mardan was in revenge for the killing of a rebel leader by police, but added that a ceasefire declared this week by a top insurgent commander remained intact.

The blast is the first since the swearing-in at the end of March of Pakistan’s new government, which has since began talks with the Taliban and vowed to discard pro-US President Pervez Musharraf’s strongarm tactics.

“We abide by our announcement of a ceasefire. Today’s attack was to level the score with police, who first violated the terms of the truce by killing one of our commanders,” Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar told AFP.

The ceasefire was announced two days earlier by Pakistani Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud, who has denied accusations by the previous government of masterminding the slaying of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto.

The Daily Times is with me on this and they made a good call in their editorial, they don’t see the peace lasting either:

The Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief, Baitullah Mehsud, has ordered his militants not to attack Pakistani security forces henceforth and warned that anyone violating his orders would be punished publicly. The TTP distributed pamphlets saying that “offensives” against the Pakistan army in Waziristan, Tank, Gomal and Dera Ismail Khan should be abandoned, and anyone who doesn’t obey the order would be “hanged upside down in the bazaars”.

The governor of the NWFP, Mr Owais Ghani, has confirmed from Peshawar that talks with Mr Mehsud are underway and “making progress”. He said the release of the TNSM chief, Sufi Muhammad, had attracted positive feedback from Malakand Division. He did not say if the talks were made conditional by the TTP to the withdrawal of the Pakistan army from the Tribal Areas, but that is what is being reported. Of course, it is presumed that if the army is withdrawn it would be in return for the re-establishment of the writ of the Pakistan state.

The same day in Bajaur Agency, close to the Afghan border, Afghan troops had an encounter with Pakistani border guards as a result of which one Pakistani soldier died. The Afghan forces were pursuing militants who had gone across the border and attacked the Afghan check post. In the exchange of fire, 10 Taliban militants died. Unfortunately, in the process, the Afghans ended up firing at the Pakistani check post. The press has been told that it was a “misunderstanding” and both sides have met at the command level and sorted it out.

The pattern, though, is familiar. The Afghans think that the Taliban raiders are “facilitated” by Pakistani border guards who let them in before the attacks inland and let them out when they are fleeing. Although the atmospherics with Kabul have been maintained, everyone knows that the Karzai government is deeply suspicious and resentful about what it thinks is Pakistan’s role in infiltrating the Taliban into Afghanistan. The ISAF-NATO command in Afghanistan backs up the allegations and is indeed behind much of the protest launched against Pakistan in Kabul.

The Hunger vs. The Gas II

The National Review online details some of the effects of mandated corn ethanol here.

The production of ethanol is not the only factor driving food prices up. Demand for food is growing in China and India as more people in those countries move into the middle class. Fuel prices are up, making it more expensive to cultivate food crops and transport them to market. A drought in Australia, a major wheat exporter, has sent bread prices soaring.

But demand for ethanol has also had an impact on food prices. It’s simple economics: Farmers have planted a lot of new corn on acres where they once grew other food crops such as soybeans and wheat, and they are selling all of that new corn — and then some — to ethanol distilleries. That means there are fewer acres devoted to food crops, and there is less corn available for feeding livestock at a time when worldwide demand for meat and milk is rising. Less supply plus greater demand equals higher prices.

There is little the U.S. government can do to make gasoline less expensive and nothing it can do about the weather in Australia. The production of ethanol, on the other hand, is directly related to government policies that subsidize it and require its use in gasoline. Absent government intervention, there would be little demand for ethanol. It has a lower energy content than gasoline, it is not significantly cheaper, and it is more difficult to transport to points of sale.

We force the use of our earliest and dirtiest forms of energy combined to power vehicles and call it green. Food was the original source of energy, and it powered humans and their competitors. Fire was the second form. Burning food that takes great energy to produce doesn’t make sense when the combustion still puts pollution in the air. It really makes less sense as people die of hunger.

BDS Moonbat Arrested for Attacking Cerebral Palsy Victim in Wheelchair

BDS and Moonbattery know few bounds, Lawhawk has the story at A Blog For All.

Update: Doing a little digging on the group “We are change” it turns out that they are 9/11 Troofer Moonbats, who love Lyndon LaRouche and Michael Bloomberg. (They want Obama dumped for Bloomberg, or maybe LaRouche does, the stench of madness permeates their forum, I’ll be honest that I didn’t hang out too long….) From the forum:

The now rapidly accumulating evidence of a European plot to establish a fascist dictatorship over western and central Europe, when this ongoing activity is compared with the fascist plot led by the cabal gathered around New York’s Mayor Bloomberg, and around traditionally fascist figures such as George Shultz and Felix Rohatyn of Pinochet regime notoriety, makes it fair to say that an immediate threat of an international fascist coup d’etat is currently in full swing in both the U.S.A. and western and central Europe. It is only during this month that the implications of this trans-Atlantic fascist plot have exposed themselves as a clear and present immediate danger to civilization world-wide.
Every sane citizen on both sides of the Atlantic should recognize this as a threat to the life and freedom of his or her nation and families. Those who do refuse to recognize this as an immediate threat, should be classed, as pathetic fools, or worse, like the poor Germans who did not take seriously the threat which Mussolini and Hitler represented to civilization as a whole already in 1933-1934.
This trans-Atlantic plot is steered from the circles of former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s London. It must be stopped now, or there will be virtually no major elections of actually representative forms of government, in either North America, nor western and central Europe, during this year.
The key to understanding this clear and present danger, is as follows.
The failed first draft of the London-sponsored Lisbon treaty used to design this fascist coup effort, was launched on the impetus from the same Prime Minister Tony Blair who orchestrated the fraudulent launching of the presently still ongoing war in Southwest Asia. That is to emphasize that the original draft of the Lisbon Treaty was launched before August 2007, before the clearly visible eruption of a presently hurtling, general, global financial breakdown-crisis, which is now sending the world as a whole in the direction of a near-term collapse into a global new dark age.
This present, new, far more savage Lisbon draft, which embodies changes which were being kept as secret as possible until the most recent weeks, if it is rammed through successfully as treaty-law between now and April-May, would immediately establish a fascist international dictatorship over all western and central Europe, a dictatorship based on the same evil purposes as the alliance around the Presidential ambitions of Mayor Bloomberg, and Bloomberg’s pro-fascist (e.g., “public private partnership,” corporatist swindle) alliance with Governor Schwarzenegger, George Shultz, and fascist Felix Rohatyn, et al., in the U.S.A.
Ignore foolish, or lying babblers like Representative Barney Frank, or Felix Rohatyn’s captive dummy, Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Our republic’s lawful existence is in immediate threat of destruction under the influence of the enemy foreign power centered in the role of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his followers. Defend our republic against that enemy, while you still can.
If the backers of this international fascist plot win their attempted takeover of Europe between now and May, and if the virtually inevitable dumping of Obama by his present financial backers brings the candidacy of Mayor Bloomberg to the fore, you, Mr. and Mrs. Citizen, will have virtually lost your freedom, and much more, for generations still to come.

The Hunger vs the Gas

This morning a collection of articles and quotes on a real crisis vs. an imagined or inflated one:

Doug Ross at The Journal points out a little noted story about a group that is directly challenging the IPCC conclusions from the famous computer-generated hockey stick graph. New data belies the effect of carbon in the computer modeled graph.
carbon graph

At American Thinker there are two articles of note, Earth First! (people later):

And frankly, to hear people who are so wealthy that they’re clinically obese from excess food and leisure time yammering on about what kind of light-bulbs they use, while other people are literally starving to death…  It’s beyond bizarre.  It speaks to a frightening level of self-deception that seemingly intelligent folks engage in en masse.

And No Starvation for Fuel!:

No Blood for Oil” is a spurious rallying cry on the left, but apparently it is acceptable for the poor in the third world to starve so that American Eco-activists can feel self-righteous about driving “flex-fuel” vehicles.  According to the WORLD BANK:

“almost all of the increase in global maize production from 2004 to 2007 (the period when grain prices rose sharply) went for biofuels production in the U.S.

A quote from the Bloomberg article linked in the American Thinker article above:

Energy independence is important, but biofuels have very limited potential in that regard. Elam states that it would take the entire world grain crop to make enough ethanol to replace just the U.S.’s annual consumption of gasoline. A solution to an excessive reliance on greenhouse-gas-emitting fossil fuels must be found, but biofuels aren’t it.

During the Bengal famine, Sen found that the government failed to fight the catastrophe effectively because it didn’t recognize that high prices were the true source of the problem. Cognizant of the lessons of history, then, the initial steps being taken seem prudent given the enormous risks.

For example, the U.S. has already committed an additional $200 million in food aid to help in the current crisis.

Still, we must also look ahead to policy changes that can have a longer-term positive impact. With that in mind, how can one possibly justify continued government subsidies for bio- fuels?

It’s wonderful that others are picking this up and publicizing it, however it’s horrible that it took food riots to gain the notice. I’ve been predicting this path a while, for both oil and food are too valuable to burn.

It takes clean abundant power to take care of the billion of people in this world and maintain clean ecosystems as well. That’s why energy and environment have been a part of this online journal since it’s creation. We as a nation have a noble challenge before us this century, and it’s not staving off Global Warming; instead it’s leading the world to a clean energy abundant future. Do not let the eco-luddites steal the lightning from our children.

UN Marxist Calls for Food Uprising When UN is at Fault

Jean Ziegler UN “special rapporteur on the right to food” blasts the developed nations and blames globalization for the coming starvation, neglecting the fact that the forces of globalization have kept the world out of famine the past two decades. Millions have lived who would have died without the efforts of the west and the growth of Capitalism throughout the globe, that’s easy enough to see in the presentation embedded below. Here’s what Jean said:

Ziegler said he was bound to highlight the “madness” of people who think that hunger is down to fate.

“Hunger has not been down to fate for a long time — just as (Karl) Marx thought. It is rather that a murder is behind every victim. This is silent mass murder,” he said in an interview.

Ziegler blamed globalisation for “monopolising the riches of the earth” and said multinationals were responsible for a type of “structural violence”.

“And we have a herd of market traders, speculators and financial bandits who have turned wild and constructed a world of inequality and horror. We have to put a stop to this,” he said.

Ziegler said he believed that one day starving people could rise up against their persecutors. “It’s just as possible as the French Revolution was,” he said. [ editor: yes, the French Revolution was so wonderful, it brought “The Terror” and “The Great Terror”, and let’s not forget Mao’s famines, he was a follower of Marx. ]

Jean’s spinning the line right now that the genocidal tyrants and failed governments across the world will use as they put down their food riots with brutal murders and suppression. In reality any nation can feed itself no matter how dense the population if they can reach the farming efficiencies achieved by 16th century Japanese peasants. Using more modern techniques and reasonably priced energy, there isn’t an excuse for a country who is unable to feed its people.

If he feels the need to blame someone the guilty parties have been named here: OPEC, Al Gore, Kyoto, the UN IPCC.

Here’s a wonderful presentation that demonstrates the effects of Capitalism and Freedom and how it pulled so many nations out of the ditch of third world poverty and chronic hunger the past three decades:

.

To demonstrate the effect of Energy on the ability to grow sufficient crops once more, we have this report * from IAASTD (International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development ) Scroll through it — you will find that energy is the key component even though the report leads with climate change as a factor. Energy is needed for fertilizer, transport, cultivation, and improved water resources. You can see the effects of “small is beautiful” farming in income, mortality rates, and production numbers in several charts – small scale low-energy farming is ugly and deadly. In a low energy future the world faces chronic famine, in an abundant energy future the world is fine and wealth grows across the board.

* apparently all the historic PDF”s at the IAASTD are now offline for some reason. I hope they are burying data because it doesn’t support current political theory.

Al Qaeda on the Ropes

The Khyber pass battles continue, and along with that the agit prop is continuing from all sides. There are a few things that are clear however. The first is that there aren’t many foreigner fighters, or Arab Al Qaeda, left alive in Pakistan – their numbers are thinning as is pointed out by this Asia Times article. The second is that they are beginning to run out of benefactors and supplies.

The AQ spokesmen wants to paint the tribal resistance in the Khyber pass as “US paid for” resistance, however I already pointed out in past articles that the resistance would come regardless. This is the traditional battleground between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and many wars have passed through. The tribes there have held fast against all comers and endure past all belief. There’s a long tradition in the pass, and they aren’t going to put up with much interference in their lands from AQ/Taliban and Kashmiri Jihadi forces or the army. The smack down is coming, and the US doesn’t need to pay a nickel.

Both sides are pimping Nawaz Sharif of PML-N as the great savior for peace, but really  it was under Nawaz Sharif that the Jihadi groups who slipped the leash were expanded and set loose against India. It was also under Nawaz that Pakistan had their first nuclear test, and under Nawaz that the AQ Khan network worked with Iran. (Ali’s article is good, but realize that it does have a political angle. It’s also good that he’s pointing out that these groups all change their names frequently, wearing the one that fits the occasion, political or armed.)

Now follows some analysis, this is purely my speculation and you will receive the usual warning : this is unsupported by fact, it’s pure speculation

The Taliban no longer receives funding and supplies from Pakistan, so they are desperately seeking another benefactor. They don’t care if that’s Iran, or China, or Pakistan again if they can pressure it, and they will play any part needed to gain supplies and armaments. Add that with today’s strange news regarding the kidnapped Pakistani ambassador to Afghanistan, the recent move to give AQ Khan more freedom, and you get some pretty wild probabilities. From the tape:

But his reference to having been held for 27 days suggests that the video was made more than a month ago.

“We don’t have any problems, but I suffer from health issues such as hypertension and heart pain,” the white-bearded Azizuddin said.

He urged Pakistan’s ambassadors in Iran and China, as well as the country’s Foreign Ministry, to comply with Taliban demands. He did not elaborate.

Now what is up here? Are the Taliban looking for supplies and armaments by acting as some odd middle-man in a new nuclear ring?  Are they pressuring Iran to supply them through blackmail? If so then how and why does China play into this? (Note the recent Sunni Jihad mosque bombing in Shiraz, Iran – the government in Iran has characterized it as accidental, and not terror even though SJ has claimed the terror event.)

The other potential is that both Iran and China are holding jihadi prisoners that AQ wants release of. We will have to let this play out to see what is going on. If you have any guesses as to what this means, please feel free to drop a comment.

Update:

From a more detailed story at The Nation, it appears that the demands on China and Iran are for prisoner releases. See story here.

Also note that the Khyber pass has re-opened, as I predicted the Taliban can not win there and had to make a face-saving truce before tucking tail and running.
