Freedom Advocates From China Sue Yahoo

China sentenced Wang Xiaoning to ten years in prison last year for “incitement to subvert state power” …. for a blog that advocated open democratic choice of leaders. His family has now filed suit in US District Court against Yahoo and their Chinese affiliates, alleging that they provided the information that allowed the government to convict him based on his internet site. They specifically charge that Yahoo helped the Chinese government identify the anonymous blogger.

Sudan Joins Janjaweed in Genocide

18sudan-600.jpgThe New York Times reports that Sudanese planes falsely flagged as UN are running weapons and bombs into Darfur, and participating in aerial surveillance and bombing according to a confidential UN report.

The Janjaweed have picked up activities recently, burning two villages in neighboring Chad in the last few weeks; murdering hundreds, and sending thousands into refugee camps.

This is unconscionable behavior for any nation, and demands a response beyond verbal. It’s time to take these planes out of the sky, act of war or not.

President Bush speaks out strongly against this, but doesn’t this participation in Genocide call for actions, not words and threats of sanctions?

The Death of a Good Man

genpic.jpgTragedies sometimes make heroes of those you would least suspect — Liviu Librescu saved some students of his class at Virginia Tech by holding the door against Seung Hui Cho, while his Students jumped out the window. He died to gunshots from Seung.

Liviu Librescu, professor from Israel, holocaust survivor, and a good man: may you rest in peace with our deep and ever-abiding respect.

I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of G-d, I will do.

Virginia Tech Shooter Named

The Virginia Tech shooter was named this morning, he is Seung Cho Hui, a student in-country with legal visa from South Korea.

Whenever an evil person creates a tragedy like this some folks jump on the news feeding frenzy to gain notoriety for their political cause. That’s bound to happen again here.

So for those who were ready to call this a terrorist event, not the case. For those wondering about illegal immigration, not the case. For gun control advocates; you are probably still holding with bated breath about whether the guns were legal or not.

Regardless, all of the second guessing is non productive — what’s important is to recognize  that the responsibility for this goes to Seung Cho Hui, an evil man, now dead.

Jamia Hafsa Lal Masjid Break off Talks

Jamia Hafsa leaders broke off negotiations to end the library siege after an army helicopter hovered over them and took pictures. They reported that the helicopter sprayed “strange gas on them” but I would wager that’s the normal exhaust and they are exagerating.

Waziristan News

An interesting update to yesterday’s Pakistan coverage of the new Jirga and accords: Apparently most or all of the leaders who signed the original South Waziristan peace accords are now gone with the Uzbeks, which is probably why they made and signed a new one.

VA Tech Shooter Description From Victim

A victim describes the Virgina Tech massacre shooter in this video as Asian, in his 20’s, dressed in a black leather jacket. Listen as he vividly describes the shooting and where he was hit.

Reports vary from 30-32 dead (confusion over  whether or not the shooter is included in some counts) and 21 injured.

UPDATE: Reports are out that the shooter chained the doors from the inside of the Dorm where he killed the majority of the students and teachers.

The earlier shooting took place around 7:00 and later shootings 2 hours after, there is lots of talk on all channels regarding the decisions made about notifications at Virginia Tech after the first shooting. Expect that to bubble awhile, but in the end the shooter is the guilty one — learn from this and make better plans for future occurrences.

The shooter shot himself in the head by some reports, which is making identification troublesome for the authorities as he was not carrying photo ID.
