Late September Moon

Late September Moon

moon-092309-II

A took a few photos of the moon tonight, one was taken at the full 300mm focus of the lens at 200 ISO setting and 1/25 shutter speed. The other was taken at 70 mm with a plain auto setting to allow a long exposure. In the photo on the left you can see the hazy clouds that I had to focus through causing the light to diffuse and bloom.

Sublimation: Fun With Dry Ice

Sublimation: Fun With Dry Ice

fun-with-dry-iceI had some dry ice left over from repairing the freezer (we stowed the frozen food in a cooler with Dry ice while I disassembled, repaired, and reassembled the ice maker) Dry ice sublimates much faster when you put it in water, as they do to make smoke at Rock concerts and clubs:

When dry ice is placed in water sublimation is accelerated, and low-sinking dense clouds of fog (smoke-like) are created. This is used in fog machines, at theaters, discothèques, haunted houses, and nightclubs for dramatic effects. Unlike most artificial fog machines, in which fog rises like smoke, fog from dry ice hovers above the ground. Dry ice is useful in theater productions that require dense fog effects.

Kasey at the Fence

Kasey-at-the-Fence

Kasey at the Fence

Kasey typically barks when people come by, generally not in a mean tone, more of a “please come over here and play” tone. The exception is when the garbage truck comes. I think she worships it and all of the interesting smells it brings with it.

Hurricane Gulch Alaska

Hurricane Gulch Alaska

Hurricane-Gulch-AlaskaHere’s a photo of Hurricane Gulch Alaska, it’s not the greatest quality since  it was taken through the window of a moving train. I had to get this because on our many spur of the moment roadtrips to Anchorage in my youth it was traditional to always stop midway across the highway bridge to take a leak. The name comes from the powerful winds that blow through constantly, so you had to pick the right side or you would end up with a mess. Click on the thumbnail to see the larger version.

Tug of War

Tug of War

Tug-of-WarKasey and Django fighting over a toy. Once Kasey gets it free the result is usually about five minutes of full tilt running around the backyard. Django tries to cut the circle most times because he has a hard time keeping up, but then Kasey just reverses field in a blink and suddenly the circle is rotating the other direction.

Tonight’s Moon

Tonight’s Moon

moon-070109

Here is tonight’s moon, I’ve got something set wrong on the camera that I can’t find, these are coming out a bit dimmer than they used to. I’ll fiddle about and find it eventually, most likely it’s average white balance or something like that.

Ok, I have the dimness thing figured out, the other night I was trying to photograph firefly traces, and set the AWB method / setting to shade. Fixed now.
