Those Darned Leaves

leaves.jpgIt’s that time of year — when you mow your lawn once a week, and it’s still coated with leaves and the grass too long. In the rain the leaves turn into a sodden mass that smothers and rots the grass beneath, and with the damp the grass is growing like gang-busters. It looks like I have to step up the mowing regime if I don’t want spots and holes in the lawn.

249 Hsu Donors Revealed

The Hillary Clinton campaign revealed the money they were returning from Norman Hsu donors, a campaign bundler and “Hillraiser” under investigation by the FBI. Norman Hsu is also facing criminal charges in California.

This is just the tip of the iceberg however, without doubt there are more dirty bundlers to look into. From the LA Times:

WASHINGTON — The full extent of accused swindler Norman Hsu’s political network was revealed for the first time Monday in campaign finance reports filed by presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who refunded $804,850 in contributions from 249 Hsu associates.

The donors came from 22 states and Washington, D.C., but Californians accounted for the largest amount refunded from the Hsu network, $308,000. New Yorkers contributed $286,000, and $55,000 came from donors in New Jersey and Connecticut. Investors in both California and the New York area were major participants in Hsu’s financial operations.

Harry Reid Less Popular than Bush – In Nevada

frownyreid.jpgSenator Harry Reid, D-Nevada, is less popular with his constituents than President Bush is according to a Las Vegas Review poll. This stands to reason since he is declaring the war lost while we are on the path to winning it, he stands firmly against nuclear power when we need it desperately, and he’s just a generally sour person. This doesn’t fit well with a state whose major revenue source is tourism.

Captain Ed has the story.

Pakistan Update: Army Removes Mirali Curfew

In Pakistan the papers are not updated yet because it is Eid holiday, and I expect them to update later today. Right now the pre-Eid shopping frenzy is over and Pakistanis are celebrating with their families.

UPDATE: The Army has lifted the curfew in Mirali, and a tribal jirga hopes to make the new truce permanent. Some residents are reported as returning to the village, and the bazaar has re-opened. The army remains watchful. More on this from AFP, the Army is denying that a full cease-fire has been negotiated: Continue reading

Kuwait to Buy Patriot Missiles

raytheon-patriot-missile-facility-test-equipment-bg.jpgIn a good strategic move Kuwait will be purchasing Patriot missiles from the US. While I normally do not like it when advanced technology armaments are sold to foreign nations, this case is different. Patriots are defensive technologies, and the more nations who have Patriots and like technologies then the less threat Nuclear and other ICBM threats are. This is a good move to ensure commerce and allies are not threatened.

Iran lies just across the Gulf, and has not only made continual threats to interupt shipping; they have blocked the Strait of Hormuz in the past.

From Space War:

Kuwait is to buy an unspecified number of Patriot missiles from the United States, Defence Minister Jaber al-Mubarak al-Sabah told the state news agency KUNA on Friday. Sheikh Jaber, responding to questions about Washington’s sale of arms to Gulf allies, said “Kuwait has signed deals, not for airplanes, but for materiel such as ships and Patriot missiles.”He did not give any further details.

In July, the United States announced plans for a series of arms deals worth at least 20 billion dollars (14.6 billion euros) with Saudi Arabia and five other oil-rich Gulf states.

The deals are aimed at shoring up US allies in the Middle East and countering “a more aggressive Iran”, as one administration official put it.

Renaissance Fair

renaissance-fair.jpgWe went to the Renaissance Fair this Sunday past, and enjoyed it immensely. The usual crowd in period regalia was there, along with many shops, attractions, and of course large smoked turkey legs. I am still an awful shot with a bow, perhaps more practice next year.
