Pakistan Update

cyclone-yemyin.jpgIn Pakistan there are a quarter million homeless people in the wake of Cyclone Yemyin, the largest natural disaster to hit Pakistan since the earthquakes. The rain has affected the entire country, and even folks in the mountains near Chitral have died to its effects. ( The monsoon rains pushed forward by the Cyclone.) The Cyclone has since moved into Iran, and the storm has even been powerful enough to  break the pattern of of “the wind of 120 days” in Afghanistan a short while. Meanwhile, in the Bay of Bengal another cyclone is building. One of the horrors of this storm is finding the bodies of the deceased quickly so they can receive proper burial.

Christian Nurses Re-instated

Justice Iqbal of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered that the five Christian nurses accused of blashphemy at the Mandi Bahauddin Nursing Hostel be allowed to resume their humanitarian duties. The five were accused of defacing Quranic verses on a water-cooler, however the accuser is linked to Lal Masjid / Jamia Hafsa, madrassas that are more political than religious, and the accusation is suspect.

A full investigation and report has been ordered, but a cloud hangs over the Nurses heads for the next four weeks as a charge of blasphemy in Pakistan is very serious. Story at The Pakistan Observer.

Gas Rationing and Inflation in Iran Sparks Riots

The Iranian leadership has come under fire from the citizens as they moved to rationing gas due to shortages. Crowds rioted, and burned gas stations. This is in the face of shortages of other goods and spiraling price inflation. Story Here, and Gateway Pundit has the video.

This is a clear sign that the sanctions against Iran’s nuclear programs are having some effect.

Pakistan Update

quetta-cyclone-damage-reuters.jpgThings aren’t going great in Pakistan right now, the monsoon has started and hundreds have died to flooding, collapsing billboards, buildings and roofs. North South of Karachi a Cyclone took out part of the coastal highway, and killed 12. Update: Cyclone Yemyin has also sunk a fishing boat, and it’s feared that 32 are dead.

Meantime, the Taliban and extremists are continuing their campaigns within Pakistan, yesterday three CD shops in Charsada were bombed, and today another in Shabqadar was destroyed.  Suicide bombers intent on assassination are rumored to be in Islamabad, and power poles continue to be bombed. The extremist crows surely have come home to roost, and now they are directly attacking Pakistan and Pakistanis, seeing the writing on the wall that they will not succeed in either Iraq or Afghanistan, say what they might.

Interview With Prachandra

In this video, you can see Prachandra of the Maoist Party of Nepal squirm a bit as he fields some hardball questions from the interviewer. The uneasy balance between the Royalists, the popular movement represented by the seven parties, and the Maoists continues to teeter, and all sides are hedging their bets since the elections were postponed.

Radicalism is Destroying Islam?

In two recent articles (here and here,) Ian Wendt examines radical islamism, and counsels that we must not drive the average, non-violent, muslim towards radicalism. A true statement to a point.  The world of radical islamism is much more complex than that however — Ian fails to account for state actors in his examinations, so they are partially flawed.
