Things That Wake You in the Night

Things that wake you in the night
What wakes you from sound sleep in the middle of the night?
For me it’s usually thoughts of mortality – the past few years it’s been the mortality of our species, or the mortality of those facing the war on terror on the front lines, or those actually living in [...]

The Death of a Good Man: Norman Borlaug RIP

The Death of a Good Man: Norman Borlaug RIP

The anti-Christ of the Luddite factions in Greenpeace has died. Norman Borlaug was the pioneer of genetically modified crops that have kept billions in the subcontinent of Asia from starving to death as the Club of Rome report “Limits to Growth” had predicted in 1972. Literally billions [...]

Quick Hits

Quick Hits
With the withdrawal of US Troops from Iraqi cities negotiated by the Bush administration we see the last major Iraq policy initiative of the previous President. If anything breaks in Iraq after this, it’s on Obama.
In Pakistan the Taliban are still retreating in a hard backwards slog where they are killing their own wounded, [...]

Tigerhawk and Trailmix: Hawking Obama Up

In light of the need to “hawk” Obama up, this does present some more opportunity for Obama to appear strong without large geopolitical ramifications.

Is Worldwide Islamic Terror on the Ebb?

Is Worldwide Islamic Terror on the Ebb?
There’s certainly no dearth of terror events to report from Pakistan, the Mid-east, Afghanistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Iraq, etc. in any given week, however there are now single days without a report of Islamic terror anywhere.
For three years I’ve done an almost daily surf of news from all electronic sources [...]

Taliban Destroy More Buddhas

Taliban Destroy More Buddhas
Adil Najam at ATP looks at the Swat Valley as it was then, and as it is now, and there are videos at his site showing the paradise that Swat was. Buddhas are not all that Mullah Fazlullah and his terror army of children are destroying. In the video you also see them [...]

Pakistan Lost II

Pakistan Lost II
Back in December both Bill Roggio and I said Swat was lost, (Pakistan Lost.) The post is ironically titled – Swat itself is a beautiful mountain paradise, or could be without the Taliban infestation. Traveling to Swat now would be like going upriver to meet Colonel Kurtz. Here’s what I said back then:
The [...]

Pakistan Lost

As long as the ruling parties and elites in Pakistan continue to externalize their own problems this death spiral will continue. If they wake up one morning however and say “No, we don’t want to be the next Somalia, we must do something” then there could be some hope, the bird could gain wing and soar again; but in the current contretemps with India over Mumbai I don’t see many signs of that.

India Releases Names and Pictures of Mumbai Terrorists

Pakistan Raids Lashkar e Toiba Camp

Just breaking, Pakistan has raided a Lashkar e Toiba camp, who are believed by most world intelligence agencies to be responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks. This comes just in the wake of Secretary of State Rice stating unequivocably on Wolf Blitzer’s program that there was “No doubt that the attacks were planned in Pakistan.”
Story from [...]

US to UN Soon: Hamid Gul is a Terrorist

As a followup to yesterday’s story on Hamid Gul, Bill Roggio has made some queries and has a solid report up at The Long War Journal. Well worth your your time to read.

US asks UN to Declare Hamid Gul a Terrorist

The US is asking the UN to declare Hamid Gul and three other ex-ISI terrorists, this according to the International Times. Since Hamid Gul himself is a known liar, (see this interview two weeks after 9/11,) I wouldn’t put it beyond him to float this finely crafted newsbit on his own. So the 24 hour [...]

The Confession on Mumbai: Timeline

There’s now a leaked confession in India from the one live terrorist out to the news, and it made the rounds yesterday. It came out very fast, and I’ll withold judgement on its veracity until more of the real evidence comes out. The confession does lay out a realistic timeline, but there are a few [...]

Iran Receives Praise For Terror Aid to Al Qaeda: Zawahiri Letter

In an intercepted letter to Iran, Ayman Al Zawahiri praises Iran for their aid in setting up the terror cells in Yemen responsible for the recent US Embassy attacks there. In the past both Al Qaeda and the Taliban have sheltered in Iran, and without Iran’s logistics and weapons aid it’s doubtful that they can [...]

Winning in Afghanistan Long Enough to Leave

The post title above is deliberately provocative, but it gets to the point of the matter, for Afghanistan is significantly different than Iraq. Please chew on that a minute before you disagree. I am certainly not saying that we should drag up, the title challenges the embedded assumptions of the armchair followers of the war (those [...]

Senior Al Qaeda Leader Targetted in Bannu Missile Strike

Reports from Bill Roggio and AFP both say we might have gotten another member of Al Qaeda’s Shura council. A good way to go into the Thanksgiving holidays.

Sayyid Imam Calls Zawahiri a Liar and Cursed Before God

In a book being published serially, Sayyid Imam points out the lies and double-dealing of Ayman Al Zawhari, and challenges him to a cursing before God. See here at Jihadica, partial list below:
Zawahiri repeatedly says I wrote the Document [the Tarshid] under the supervision of the U.S. and the Jews. He is a liar and [...]

First Snow in Pakistan

Snow is falling in the higher passes as people prepare for winter, and the country faces the economic downturn being seen worldwide. Many pin it on the downturn in the US, but the housing bubble burst in the US is really not the whole of it, it’s just another symptom. The downturn we see now is really [...]

Too Risky

There’s a lot more than this that could be said, but in campaign commercials you have to keep it simple.

President Zardari of Pakistan Under Lal Masjid Fatwa for Comments to Palin

In a bizzarre turn of events President Zardari is under a Fatwa from Lal Masjid, (yes, that Lal Masjid,) and it was issued by a relative of Abdul Rashid Ghazi, instrumental in the deaths of many students from the Mosque. From IBN Live:
A Pakistani cleric has issued a fatwa against Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari [...]
