T: No chance. That picture was cropped, badly. Those MP5’s belong to Indian commandos (who also use MP5’s) and are in the uncropped version of the same photo.

Some of the Indian commandos that stormed Chabad House also had MP5’s.

There is absolutely no question whatsoever that the two terrorists from the train station were carrying AK series rifles.

Also – The bolt-action rifles seen in the hands of various Indian reserve forces are not elderly Lee-Enfields (.303 caliber). They’re slightly less elderly Ishapore 2A1’s (7.62mm NATO).

Other Indian troops were shown carrying new production INSAS rifles.

Interesting update here for you, snipped from Jerry Pournelle’s place:

I was watching the live web feed from Mumbai during the early part of the action. One of the reports I saw fairly early on, and not repeated again was that a small group of the terrorists had set up outside of the hospital that was designated as the site of the command post for anti terrorism during an attack, and they waited until after the first attacks, then killed the head guys as they arrived to set up the command post.

Also, the weapons were not AK’s, but were actually H&K MP5’s which almost had to have come from Pakistan’s ISI.

The speculation is that it was either the “zip pack” autoloader used in conjunction with revolver, or the rare type that has a replaceable cylinder pack.

AK-47’s don’t use 50 round magazines, although some were made at one point. From the photos those were the standard 30 round mags taped together. The Indian military and police also use AK series rifles, additional ammo and/or firearms may have been captured from the Indian police during the massacre.
