In Israel, the heaviest fighting today took place in Bint Jbeil, with several IDF casualties and five deaths, however 30 Hezbollah were sent to graves, and the IDF took out several more facilities. The civilian leadership seems to be hesitant at the moment. My vote would be for them to step out of the way and let some of the veteran military leaders go at it unfettered. Olhmert is the source of the angst to me. Overnight the IDF struck over 80 Hez targets and captured a SAM battery as it was setting up. Meanwhile 160 rockets rained into northern Israel taking the total over 3000 since the start of the conflict, and most of the north is now being evacced in a sign that the Israelies realize that this could run long.
Israel is also hacking into Al Manar TV and running a psyops war against Hezbollah to overcome Nasrallah propaganda, see the video at Ynet.
In Morocco a terror cell has been uncovered, and all 44 members arrested by authorities. From Adnikronos:
Rabat, 8 August (AKI) – Moroccan police uncovered an alleged Muslim terror cell including 44 militants active in different cities in the country, Arab daily ‘al-Sharq al-Awsat’ reported on Tuesday, citing interior ministry sources in Rabat. The cell was reportedly previously unknown and was called ‘group of the Ansar al Mahdi’. It allegedly included five soldiers. The suspected militants have all been arrested. According to the report, the group was recruiting members and training them in the use of explosives in the northern Moroccan area of Nador.
In a sign that even Pro-Hezbollah governments know the Djinn of Terror is out of the bottle from Iran’s agitation, Indonesia has re-implemented measures not seen since the tyrannical reign of Suharto:
In its fight against terrorism, the police in Indonesia now require all visitors to villages in the country to be registered, an old tradition that’s been brought back to life. “The register will serve to control the flow of visitors and could be a way to track some terrorists that are on the run, such as Noordin Mohammed Top,” according to the police, referring to the Malaysian national who is wanted in connection with a series of bomb attacks in Indonesia.
The police have asked village chiefs to take note of as many details as possible of the people that enter and exit from their villages and to inform the authorities in case these people are involved in suspicious activity.
The register of visitors is an old tradition in Indonesia that is still now used in certain parts of the country, including certain areas of Jakarta. Reporting was required particularly during the years under the rule of Suharto [1968 - 1995], when it was used as a means of controlling people’s movements. In the past few years, the practice has since declined and is no longer reliable. The request to return to this tradition in the name of the fight against terrorism was launched by top representatives of the police in central Java, the area where it is believed that Noordin Mohammed Top has taken refuge.
Also from Indonesia via Yahoo News:
Indonesia has no way to prevent Muslim militants travelling from its shores to the Middle East or elsewhere to wage war against Israel, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said on Tuesday.
The self-styled head of the Jakarta-based ASEAN Muslim Youth Movement said last week that more than 200 militants had been sent on missions to attack Israel’s interests and countries that support the Jewish state.
Militant groups in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, have made claims in the past of sending volunteers to participate in conflicts overseas which have often proved exaggerated.
In Iraq, US forces perform another hand-off to the Iraqi Army:
As further evidence to the continued progress of Iraqi security forces, the 4th Iraqi Army Division will officially assume the lead for security operations Aug. 8 in most of Salah ad Din and Kirkuk provinces, previously controlled by units from the 101st Airborne Division.
The handover of forward operating bases and security lead demonstrates the progress being made by the Iraqi security forces, reiterates successes, and highlights the progress of the legitimate Iraqi government as a positive move toward full national sovereignty and self-reliance, said a Multi-National Force-Iraq spokesman
IN India it’s judement day for the ‘93 Islamist terrorist bombers, from Times of India (turn on pop up blocker)
The alleged masterminds-Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon-are out of India but about 37 of those who stand accused of transporting and planting the deadly RDX explosive at strategic locations across the city have been in jail ever since they were tracked down by investigators in 1993.
Most of them were young Muslim men, mostly school and college dropouts who were unemployed. They were earlier engaged in smuggling activities for Tiger Memon. After the conspiracy was hatched, many of them were taken to Pakistan via Dubai for training in handling of arms and explosives.
Finally from Japan, something I think we could use right now: Bushido.
