The resurfacing of the doomed marriage ammendment debate really has three purposes, two I can support and the other not.
The foremost reason is to heal a rift, to regain trust for the Republican legislators who feel their base shifting like the Dragon’s back beneath them over the illegal immigration and border security issues.
The second is to distract – smoke and mirrors don’t work on a republican base, and they ought to know that by now. People are highly focused on border security and illegal immigration, and that’s not going to change for the next couple of years. Candidates better get that figured out quickly.
The good thing about the debate however is that it will once again put on record who is for and against the ammendment with an election around the corner. It will highlight who the RINOs are, and put some Dems in a real predicament.
Potentially the fourth reason — maybe it’s not doomed… maybe in this election year politicos are a wee bit nervous, sensing something from voters they haven’t in a few years — maybe there are enough votes there with an election on the line.
In the end the real answer is to craft state laws that will pass muster with “The Supremes”, probably an easier task with Alitto and Roberts now on the court. Here’s an article with links to the Kansas and Missouri laws at KC Buzzblog, and an open comment thread at Hot Air.
