Taliban Destroy More Buddhas

Taliban Destroy More Buddhas

Adil Najam at ATP looks at the Swat Valley as it was then, and as it is now, and there are videos at his site showing the paradise that Swat was. Buddhas are not all that Mullah Fazlullah and his terror army of children are destroying. In the video you also see them blow up schools, destroying the future hopes of all. Here’s what’s happening there now under the terror of Fazlullah’s TTP Taliban, previously know as TNSM:

Aloha Snackbar

Here’s a must see protest video from Mere Rhetoric – in it you will calls for genocide against Israel, direct support for Hamas and Hezbolloh, children dressed as shaheed, and of course many cries of Aloha Snackbar! This in Toronto Canada where Mark Steyn was put on trial for expressing mild disaproval of Islam.

Where Darwin Was on His Birthday in 1834

752px-strait_of_magellanWhere Darwin Was on His Birthday in 1834

Darwin at that time was exploring Patagonia  which is the current day tip of Chile and Argentina. They were wending their way through the strait with it’s strange currents, cul de sac channels, and baffling winds. Few who haven’t been there understand the difficulties of threading your way through by sail, but it’s informative that the original passage of the strait by Magellan took 38 days. Due to the narrowness of the passage and the limited sea room clipper ships typically avoided the strait and instead passed South through the Drake passage.

Here’s the entry from his diary that day:

patagonian_indiansWith very baffling winds we anchored late in the evening in Gregory Bay, where our friends the Indians anxiously seemed to desire our presence. During the day we passed close to Elizabeth Island, on North end of which there was a party of Fuegians with their canoe &c. They were tall men & clothed in mantles; & belong probably to the East Coast; the same set of men we saw in Good Success Bay; they clearly are different from the Fuegians, & ought to be called foot Patagonians. Jemmy Button had a great horror of these men, under the name of “Ohens men”. “When the leaf is red, he used to say, Ohens men come over the hill & fight very much.”

Open Republicanism

Open Republicanism

Is there such a thing? Will the Republicans always be run by PAC’s and pundits, or can they actually toss the tired rhetoric aside and move into this century? All good questions that I don’t have the answer for, but we must do something soon.
At a time when our Republican elected officials can only influence, should we look like hysterical ninnies? When we are turning red states purple, should divisive social issues be our lead? Are we the party of liberty, or the party of despair?
More to come later, just thoughts I’m dwelling on at the moment.

Pork Bubbles: Graphic Representation of the Stimulus Bill

Pork Bubbles

Now that the porkathon in Congress is over and the Stimulus bill certain to pass, it’s time to look at what your congresscritters hath wrought. There’s a great graphic representation of it over at the Washington post that breaks it down into proportionally representative bubbles. A quick glance will show you that Health and Human Services gets a lion’s share, while military spending is a small bubble, and from the labeling it looks like “lights on” maintenance, and nothing new for the military. Please stop by to take a look.

Meanwhile, Washington Times points out how recipients of previous bailout dollars keep donating to politicians with your tax dollars. Isn’t there something morally wrong with that, if not legally?

A Washington Times analysis found that executives and employee-funded political action committees of banking companies that received bailout money have donated more than $2 million to members of Congress and other politicians since lawmakers approved the federal rescue of America’s financial system in October.

Over the next few years most conservative bloggers are going to be obsessed with Obama – you aren’t going to see me focuing there too much. Instead I think it better to keep the heat and light on Congress, because that’s where the next generation’s problems will arise from.

Milton Friedman on Greed

At times like this when the “best and the brightest” have made huge mistakes, and government controls and intervention are shown to be useless, it’s good to remember the prime things that drive economies: key among them is self interest, or as some would have it, Greed.

You Say Greed, I say Self Interest

Who can you trust in a society full of greed? Look in the mirror, look to your family and friends, but be careful even with the latter…

At times like this when the “best and the brightest” have made huge mistakes, and government controls and intervention are shown to be useless, it’s good to remember the prime things that drive economies: key among them is self interest, or as some would have it, Greed. We’ve had hundreds of years of great growth, innovation, and unprecedented success in the US primarily due to our affection for capitalism and innovation. We’ve hit a stall, but it won’t last forever so please don’t let the doom crying pundits toss Capitalism out with the bath water. H/T Instapundit.

Korean War Memorial Addition

korean-war-memorial-statue1I was driving by the Korean War Memorial in Overland Park and noticed that a statue has been added since my last visit. Apologies for the poor quality photo, bad lighting, and bad angle here, this was snapped while driving. I’ll try to get by this weekend and get some better photos of the statue that’s been added to the memorial. Also note that I’m not happy with the numnutz who placed the “no skateboarding” sign right in the middle of the main view that passing traffic sees of this memorial.
