UPDATE: Memri Blog reports that that US intelligence is hunting Osama Bin Laden in Tora Bora. He is supposed to be hiding in a “white cave” inside Tora Bora and the current military operations are designed to capture him. This is according to “unamed Pakistani Diplomatic sources” in a translated article at Al Watan.
Today the news warned of an impending new Al Qaeda threat in the US, but government officials stated there wasn’t actionable intelligence or indicators to specify a target. The wording indicated that Al Qaeda has an “active Plot”. Usually these warnings come from increased chatter on the internet and other locations, interrogations of newly captured AQ operatives, or from foreign governments. From Economic Times:
Al-Qaeda has an active plot to hit the West and although the US is aware of this, it does not possess precise tactical detail to issue a warning or raise the existing threat level, a top American counter-terrorism official has said.
Another attack on America is only “inevitable”, Vice Admiral (retd) John Scott Redd, the Head of the National Counter Terrorism Center, told the Newsweek magazine.
“We have very strong indicators that al-Qaeda is planning to attack the West and is likely to (try to) attack, and we are pretty sure about that. We know some of the precursors … they would like to come West, and they would like to come as far West as they can,” he said.
Redd said what is not known is “who this terrorist is going to be, whether he is going to come out of Karachi and be stopping in Frankfurt; travelling on through to New York with his European Union passport to do something
In Yemen the US Embassy staff received warning, and Yemen is the ancestral home of Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda’s absentee “leader”. From Bloomberg:
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen told its employees to avoid restaurants, shopping areas, hotels and tourist attractions in the capital, Sanaa, because of an active al-Qaeda presence.
Westerners may be targeted in Yemen and U.S. citizens in the country are urged to exercise caution and avoid crowds and demonstrations, according to a notice on the mission’s Web site.
The embassy didn’t say whether a specific threat prompted the warning. Calls to the embassy weren’t answered.
At the Trumpet, they report that emails from the Glasgow Bombing suspects were going to American addresses, which lends credence to the probability of Al Qaeda cells like the one that hit in Glasgow here in the US, potentially in medical circles. From The Trumpet.com:
At one point, two of the British plotters attempted to travel to the U.S. for an unknown purpose.
“Because of the London and Glasgow plot, we now know communications have been made from al Qaeda to operatives in the United States,” a counterterrorism official told the newspaper.
The source added that no specific names, targets or timelines were uncovered regarding an imminent attack on the American homeland.
“I believe there are cells in the United States, or at least people who aspire to create cells in the United States,” Northern Command Air Force General Victor Renuart said. “To assume that there are not those cells is naive, and so we have to take that threat seriously” (ibid.).
Yesterday in Islamabad Pakistan an Arab Al Qaeda operative barely escaped capture, and his family was taken into custody, along with Kalashnikovs, four suicide vests, and other detonators and exlplosives. The escapee was Abdur Rahim, and a net search doesn’t show much further information, as a search returns thirty pages or so on Shaqeel Abdur Rahim a basketball player, an Arabic writer, and a Pakistani Soccer player. Hint to AQ: if you really want to be famous and widely admired, take up sports… From the Daily Times:
Security forces arrested a local doctor and the wife of an Arab Al Qaeda explosives expert in a pre-dawn raid on a house here, triggering protest from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) which termed the arrests as “American agenda,” officials and eyewitnesses said. “We foiled a subversive act,” Dir Lower District Coordination Officer Dr Attaur Rehman told reporters as JI activists blocked Chakdara Road to protest the raid, which also resulted in the arrest of paediatrician Dr Muhammad Rasool. Four suicide jackets, a Kalashnikov, a rifle and explosives were seized in the joint raid that included both paramilitary and army soldiers, Rehman said. “We had actionable intelligence that Muhammad Yousaf alias Abdur Rahim, a Saudi Arabian national, was in the house but he fled before we conducted the raid,” he added. A night watchman of the area where the raided house is located was also arrested for questioning. Daily Times learnt that the wife of the suspected Arab and his child were also taken into custody at an undisclosed location by authorities.
Perhaps some form of indicator was found in the house from this raid, but that’s a stretch.
